As part of the RAS President’s Reception (13 February 2004) there was an exhibition celebrating the contribution of women in astronomy. 'Astronomy' includes 'geophysics', i.e. astronomy, astroparticle physics, solar-terrestrial physics, astrobiology, planetary sciences, history of science, etc. The material will be available to other exhibitions on request.
I am still collecting information about contemporary women with a connection to the RAS. Here is some information about the format, etc.
I think any woman with an interest in astronomy has something to celebrate when you consider the perceived difficulties of keeping girls interested in ‘hard science’ at school! The information should fit on one side of A4 (around 400 words or less). I can do the formatting and layout if necessary. I can cope with most formats, but it is easier for me to have text as plain text or word, since I will use powerpoint for my final layout.
Please include a picture of yourself (domestic or formal, action or still), and other ‘scientific’ pictures are welcome. I am looking for variety.
I reserve the right to do some editing if I regard it as necessary.
A lot of non-scientists/non-experts come to the RAS President’s Reception, and this fact together with my plans for a wider audience through the year means that the posters should aim to celebrate the fact that women do science well rather than what we do in technical detail. I hope it will encourage young people to consider careers in science by the variety of jobs we have and career paths we have followed.
The information will be used as part of the exhibition ‘Celebrating Women in Astronomy’ for the RAS President’s Reception at Burlington House, Piccadilly, London on 13 February 2004. Historical figures in astronomy and geophysics will be celebrated too.
The contributions will be combined into several A0 posters. These posters will then be made available as a travelling exhibition.
I plan to put the material into a web-exhibition ‘Celebrating Women in Astronomy’.
NB If you do not want your material included in either the travelling exhibition or the web-exhibition, please let me know.
